Question of the Month
Q:
Sometimes, especially at the end of a long week, I
often feel depressed about my business and may even
debate going on. How do I stay motivated?
Art Blanchette, Kutztown SBDC BSFS
Facilitator:
I have found in my experience that an apparent lack of
motivation is actually a lack of inspiration. That comes
from losing sight of what my business is really
about.
To be successful, every person and every business has
to have a "reason for being." Putting it another way,
we need a mission statement. This is not a set of
goals
that we want to reach by a certain date; it is the
overarching purpose for our existence.

| Keeping Calm in the Midst of Chaos by Lynn R. Miller |
 |
If you were to describe an effective leader, or an
effective human being for that matter, would "stressed-
out" be among the adjectives that readily comes to
mind? Of course not.
More likely, you would picture
someone, probably someone you admire who is "calm,
cool and collected," even in a crisis or under pressure.
As a part-time Arbitrator for Lehigh County, I have
seen
and heard many lawyers argue and present their cases.
But there is one attorney who stands out in my mind as
a glaring example of a heart attack waiting to happen.
He started out all right, but as soon as opposing
Counsel challenged him, his face turned beet red,
sweat
began to glisten on his brow, and he started to stutter
like Porky Pig. His cool facade was shattered and he
was boiling over with raw emotion. You could literally
see his blood pressure rise. I wanted to call in the
paramedics to stand by.

| Your Body: Love it? Hate it? Or Learn to Enjoy Living with it? by Harriet Layton |
 |
Many people are unhappy with their bodies. Some
even
hate theirs, and will continually find fault with various
body parts: tummy, hips, and thighs. Well, you get the
picture. We are bombarded daily with images of sleek,
thin-to-the-point-of unhealthy bodies. Although this is
especially true for women, men are by no means
exempt from this bombardment. What these images
have done is create a feeling of hopelessness in most
people that they will never be that thin or dress that
attractively.
Well, it's simply not true. You can change how people
react to you, regardless of your size by learning to
dress for your body style and creating a more positive
image. Additionally, a more positive image creates the
desire and ability to get to a more healthy weight, I've
seen it happen.

| Mentors Improve Leadership Potential by Ernie Post |
 |
John C. Maxwell, in his new book "The Right to
Lead" tells of several great leaders of today. One of
those stories illustrates the value of having a mentor
relationship to help us grow as leaders.
In 1918 Rolihlahla "Nelson" Mandela was born into a
farming family in South Africa and this humble family
expected Nelson to go on to be a cattle herder. But
Nelson became the ward of Chief David Dalindyebo at
the age of twelve following his father's unexpected
death. Tribal Chief David served as a mentor to the
young Mandela. Nelson was able to watch his guardian
preside over tribal meetings of their village where he
witnessed his guardian display the skills of leadership.
Skills such as consensus building, communicating vision,
and relationship building where modeled to Nelson during
these impressionable years.
