Question of the Month

Q: How does the KUSBDC know what the training needs are for the small businesses in the Hamburg area who are attempting to take advantage of the business opportunities posed by Cabela's attracting more than 6 million shoppers per year to Hamburg?

KUSBDC: At the May 14 workshop, "Hunting for Partners, Fishing for Profits," we surveyed the attendees so that we could learn what their concerns are. On June 2, we published and distributed a "Needs Assessment" for the small businesses in the Hamburg area.

Managing Your Tool Box - Part One
    Sharpening the Saw
    by Lee Smedley
    .

When I was District Manager of a local electrical utility, I noticed how well some workers maintained their tools, and how poorly others did. You can well imagine the correlation I found between good tool maintenance and work performance.

How well do you manage your tool box? I'm talking about the metaphorical tools here, your talents and competencies critical to your job. They may be the accountabilities from your job description, the core competencies of your profession, or the specific skills you and your boss discussed just this past week. Managing those tools is not so difficult, you know. But it does require some time and attention.

Kutztown University's Small Business Development Center (KUSBDC) uses Activeplans as the central feature of its First Step series of workshops for prospective and existing entrepreneurs. The outline of the on-line model, what the SBDC calls its "Business Plan For Success," is the course manual for the four session program offered free of charge to residents of southeastern and southcentral Pennsylvania. It is used to structure the flow of information in the first two workshops and as reading assignments for all four classes. The model's financial section is the subject of the third session dealing with financial statements and sales forecasting.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving
    by Tasha Zurick

As a small business owner since 1996, having the right resources at the right time has been instrumental to the success of my company, Transfers of Learning (ToL). I have found myself saying I wish I had known about the valuable resources at the KUSBDC back in 1995-1996 when I was planning and launching my company, but unfortunately that was not the case. Despite that fact, I was fortunate to become aware of their services and resources later in my company's lifecycle.

For me, the KUSBDC has been a gift that keeps on giving. Having been referred to the KUSBDC at a conference that I attended, I was told they could help us navigate through the realm of State and Federal Contracting. We were put in contact with George Boehm, the Government Contracting Specialist in Exton who has been a tremendous support and advocate for ToL since our initial consultation.
