Last fall, after learning about the Environmental Management Assistance Program's energy efficiency services, a Kutztown SBDC Business Plan workshop attendee approached Tammy Hessler, EMAP Specialist, of the Kutztown SBDC with energy concerns for his business. He owns a 5-story office building in the Reading area. The fluorescent lighting system and the building's HVAC system are electric. The average monthly electric bill was $17,660 and $16,951 in 2001 and 2002 respectively. The client needed EMAP assistance with exploring ways to decrease his monthly electric bills.

If you are like millions of small business owners, the truth is that it's not the budget expenditure that keeps you from marketing your business or even the lack of knowledge... It's the follow through that becomes the ultimate roadblock! So many of us realize that we ultimately must enhance our business image perception, by developing or re- developing our basic image, constructing a printed sell piece or updating our web presence, but perceived lack of time and focus keeps us from achieving our goals. Well, the buck has got to stop here, and should be redirected to get you up-to-date and feeling good about your business perception....

    10. I don't need a business plan. Of course you don't need a plan. You're an expert at this, having done it so many times now. Big league coaches don't bother to plan for a game; they don't really care that much about the outcome, anyway. Generals don't make war plans. Surgeons don't have the right knowledge, staff and tools at the ready. Just wing it; you'll do fine.

The word entrepreneur has become a catch all title for just about everyone and anyone who starts and or builds a business. I've always had a bit of trouble throwing that overused, imported moniker around because I believe it's not always applied in the correct manner.

Is an entrepreneur someone who takes the family business and keeps it going? Is it the person who builds a new division of the company where they're employed? Or should it be reserved for only those who have put everything on the line in order to build their business? I'll opt for the latter....
