"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

Impact of Divorce is Difficult for Small Business Owners

Contributed by Michael Fischer, CLU, ChFC

Divorce is difficult for a family, but it's also difficult for a family business.  Family businesses make up the majority of all businesses in the United States, so it's not unusual for a divorce to impact a family's business.

One reason that a divorce endangers the future of a family business is that, unlike many assets, businesses are not easily divided.  The business is often the most valuable asset in the marriage, but it's unlikely to produce enough cash flow to pay an equitable share to a spouse who is being divorced.

How can you keep a business running in the midst of a divorce?  See Michael Fischer's insights in the full article

Managing Families in Business

It seems like a good idea at first.  You start a business and it begins to grow.  Before you know it, you have to hire someone to help you manage your company.  During times of economic uncertainty and/or recovery, many people feel more comfortable hiring a family member, spouse, child, sibling, aunt, uncle or some other relative.  The growth continues and you add an employee and then another one.  Each new-hire is another family member, either through blood or marriage.  Before you know it most of your upper management team is related to you in one way or another.

Do your loved ones also double as your employees?  Find out how to cope with and benefit from working with your family.
