Success is in the Bag for Lightning Packs, LLC

Lightning Packs, LLC is a young company preparing to sell one of the most innovative and ergonomic backpacks on the market. Based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Lightning Packs has laid the foundation for it's success with the Kutztown University Small Business Development Center (SBDC).

The heart of Lightning Packs' success rests in the curiosity of its founder,Dr. Larry Rome. A biology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Rome has enjoyed a career investigating and teaching muscle physiology for nearly 25 years. Several years ago, the United States Navy asked Rome to lend his talent to designing a high-tech submarine. Rome's work on that project soon led to another challenge from the U.S. Navy, this time to develop a way to recover energy from American soldiers traveling on foot.

Financial Issues After the Sale of Business:There's more to selling a business than selling a business

Contributed by Michael Fischer, CLU, ChFC

Once you've negotiated the sale of your business- or, better yet, while you're still in the process-consider how you expect to manage the resulting wealth. Also consider the impact it will have on your taxes and your estate plan.

Set goals. First, have a clear idea of your financial goals. Do you have deb to pay off? Do you plan to make gifts to you children or to a charity? As in your business, you will need to have goals in order to achieve them. And, rather than simply giving money to your children or a charity, you'll need to do some planning to avoid paying gift taxes or other taxes.

Selling Yourself Out of Business

You've just been awarded a major contract- and it's so major you and your staff are overwhelmed with work.  You've even hired new personnel to help with the load of this project, and soon your company's main resources flow into the new contract, leaving it vulnerable if the deal falls through.

This month, Dan Goldberg discusses the importance of having a broad client-base, and how to avoid putting all of your "eggs" into one client's basket.

In previous issues, Lynn VanDyke featured a four-part how-to series on converting any business into a successful web business.  If you missed out on these articles, you can catch up here with part one, part two, part three, and part four

Long-Term Care Insurance Offers Crucial Protection

By Kathi Kuzo

Long-term care insurance is designed to pay for the often-astronomical costs of long-term care for people with chronic disabilities. It includes custodial care- assistance with activities of daily life like eating, bathing and getting dressed- in a nursing home, assisted living facility or the patient's own home.
