  • "I'll Huff and I'll Puff and I'll Knock Your Door In!" - Jason Blitzstein Success Story
    .

Jason Blitzstein had a vision and a dream ever since he was a young teenager. This was to become a professional locksmith and start a business in that field. Jason Blitzstein had a vision and a dream ever since he was a young teenager. This was to become a professional locksmith and start a business in that field. Today, he has indeed realized that dream. For about eleven months now, Blitzstein has been running Ace Lock Company, where he handles a wide variety of home and business security issues. Such issues range from simple locks and deadbolts to more advanced safes and electronic security systems.

Ace Lock Company is a mobile business that has a range of about fifty miles. However, for bigger jobs Blitzstein is willing to go the distance and beyond. To do this, Blitzstein needed the right tools. He soon sold two of his cars to buy and outfit a van with all of the materials and equipment he would need while on the road.

George Boehm, Government Marketing Specialist Consultant on both the PTAC and DETA Government Procurement programs of the KU SBDC, has worked with Ian Zagon, Ph.D. since late 2003. Ian Zagon became a client as a result of a series of classes the KU SBDC taught for Medical Researchers at the Hershey Medical Center in late 2003 and early 2004 on entrepreneurship, business planning, research funding grants, etc. Similar classes will be repeated this year at the Hershey Medical Center by the KU SBDC in a series of detailed follow-up workshops.

Ian Zagon, Ph.D. was provided with detailed education and guidance by KU SBDC's George Boehm, as well as other research grant programs, solicitation reviews and proposals preparation, commercialization plans, program schedules and costs, etc. George Boehm also reviewed current solicitations to which Dr. Zagon was interested in. Hospitals are not immune from the nationwide problem of rising health care costs. A convergence of trends has left many health care organizations mired in red ink, even as the demand for their services continues to increase. Conventional cost-control measures are not always applicable, as they may jeopardize the hospital's ability to maintain the personnel and equipment resources necessary to provide quality care to patients.

Curtis Lambert felt he had a viable solution to help hospitals cope with this dilemma. Having taken advantage of early retirement from a health care technology company, Lambert had applied his

Insight to Success - Discounting Doesn't Grow Your Business by Jeffrey Mayer

The Big 3 - GM, Ford, and Chrysler - have been offering buyer incentives and zero-percent financing for the past few years, and they're still losing market share. They thought that they could grow their business by offering discounts. It's not working. Why? Because discounting and incentives don't work over the long term. Yes, you generate sales and cash flow today, but it comes at a H-U-G-E cost tomorrow.

The Chicago Tribune wrote a recent story about this problem that I found to be very thought provoking because discounts can dramatically reduce the value of your business. "When you put cash on the hood, it makes your brand weak. Incentives demoralize the brand" said Elena Ford, Ford Motor Co.'s director of product marketing. (If Ford's director of product marketing knows that incentives 'demoralize the brand' why do they continue to offer incentives...Just asking.)
